Recent video game reviews - Xbox 360 Review: Ninety-Nine Nights Hack-and-slash fans have been slavering

Xbox 360 Review: Ninety-Nine Nights
Hack-and-slash fans have been slavering for the release of the mystical brawler, Ninety-Nine Nights. But does this game have the goods to keep you up playing past your bedtime?

PS2 Review: Zatch Bell: Mamodo Fury
The problem with games that are based on pre-existing licenses, especially if those licenses are obscure Japanese anime shows, are that they hold very little appeal for anyone who isn’t a fan of the source material. That holds especially true when the game is as bad as Zatch Bell: Mamodo Fury, a frustrating fighting game that will try the patience of even the biggest Zatch Bell fanatic.

Xbox Review: Scarface: The World Is Yours
Although it’s an entertaining and deep game in its own right, a feeling of Grand Theft Auto deja-vu dogs Scarface: The World Is Yours at every turn. It’s an ironic twist, considering the obvious influence that the movie had on Rockstar’s star franchise, but it’s this feeling of “been there, done that” that takes a few bullets out of Tony Montana’s fully loaded clip.

PC Review: Mage Knight: Apocalypse
Mage Knight: Apocalypse’s feature list reminds us of a late night informercial: No level grind! Effortless customization! Free camera system! No monthly fee! It all sounds great until you actually get the thing home and you realize that looks can be terribly deceiving.

DS Review: Star Fox Command
The classic Star Fox franchise finally makes an appearance on the DS and blends old-school elements with newer features unique to the handheld, resulting in a splendid addition to the Star Fox legacy.

PS2 Review: Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria
The PlayStation 2 has always been a haven for RPG lovers, and though the release of the system’s successor is imminent, new entries like Valkyrie Profile 2 remind that you won’t need to pawn your internal organs to get a good roleplaying experience.

DS Review: Cooking Mama
Novice chefs and seasoned gourmands take note: Cooking Mama is one scrumptous dish. Chopping onions has never been sweeter!

PS2 Review: Tales of the Abyss
Namco Bandai’s Tales series never strays far from familiar RPG conventions in terms of characters and basic plot. Tales of Symphonia was guilty of using nearly every cliched plot point. (For example, the world of Symphonia could only be saved by a young girl with special powers and her entourage.) Tales of the Abyss begins with a similar cliche: you must avert war by sending a group of key characters from both sides to act as diplomats. However, Tales of the Abyss takes those RPG conventions in new directions and keeps the action moving with great characters, creating what is by far the best installment in the Tales franchise.

PS2 Review: Dance Dance Revolution SuperNOVA
The iconic get-up-and-move game is back, and it’s time to get back into shape! Konami has upped the ante with DDR SuperNOVA, and you’re going to have to work it to master this version.

Xbox 360 Review: NHL 2k7
2k Sports’ NHL Live 07 has garnered some serious praise, but it’s far from a one-horse race as NHL 2k7 is a legitimate contender for the digital Stanley Cup. This year’s installment of the NHL 2k series gets the obvious upgrades you’ve come to expect in a yearly sports franchise, but the Xbox 360’s horsepower gives it extra ‘oomph.’
